Among the 62 counties in New York State, the Bronx ranked last in crucial health measures and outcomes as outlined in the 2019 County Health Ranking & Roadmaps scientific report. This was Bronx County’s 10th consecutive year of receiving that ranking. 

A “least healthy” Bronx looks like:

• At a median household income of $37,400, a third of our residents face a severe housing cost burden. The poorest congressional district in the country, NY-15, is located entirely within the borough. ​

• Rates of death from asthma in the Bronx are about three times higher than the national average. Hospitalization rates are about five times higher. In some Bronx neighborhoods, it is estimated that 20% of children have asthma.
• The Bronx has one of the highest rates of hunger, with about 37% of our residents being food insecure.
• Thirty-six percent of Bronx adults have been diagnosed with hypertension and 16% with diabetes, surpassing the average for all residents in New York City.

We envision a “most healthy” Bronx, in which residents, policymakers, and stakeholders unite in the fight to address and overcome health disparities. This work will not be easy, but we at Most Healthy Bronx are equipped for the challenge.
